Summer Coding Deep Dive with Breakout Mentors & Cardinal Education

This summer, we are launching an exciting collaboration between Breakout Mentors and Cardinal Education. It is the same personalized coding with Breakout Mentors combined with the rigor and guidance of Cardinal Education.

Just like Breakout Mentors, Cardinal Education is a Bay Area company started by Stanford alumni with a track record of over a decade of success. They are an industry leader in admissions, tutoring, and test prep, focused on a long-term and personalized approach. Cardinal Education helps strategize and execute an effective long-term plan, including everything from improving study habits to structured weekly academic coaching.

Summer Coding Deep Dive

As technology is reshaping every industry, coding skills are quickly becoming essential. Unfortunately, the packed school day hasn’t adapted yet, requiring students to learn these essential skills outside the classroom. This collaboration brings a more structured approach to coding and Computer Science, especially for the unique needs of high school students, whether they’ve never written a line of code or if they’re seasoned experts.

We call it the Summer Coding Deep Dive. The personalized one-on-one instruction will be centered around a focus area and culminate in a student-led project that will put their skills to the test. The tracks are:

Starting Coding – Python

Students will dive into learning one of the most popular and widely used programming languages – Python. They’ll master the fundamental thinking skills and learn to code games and apps with confidence.

Age: 7 and up
Experience: Less than a year of coding

Starting Computer Science – Python

Students will learn the fundamentals of Computer Science through Stanford’s world-famous CS 106A course. Materials build upon coding fundamentals with powerful new concepts to hook students on the exciting subject.

Age: 13 and up
Experience: Some experience, less than two years of coding

AP Computer Science Preparedness – Java

This track will prepare students for AP Computer Science, giving them crucial exposure to CS concepts so that they can excel in the class in the fall. AP CS is a make-or-break class for high schoolers and will either deter students from pursuing computer science or will deepen their skills and passion for the field.

Age: 13 and up
Experience: Some experience, less than two years of coding

Intermediate Web Development – Javascript

All the major tech companies demand that web developers know Javascript, but many youth courses don’t go beyond basic HTML and CSS. In this track, students learn more about the basic structure of the internet, how to call APIs, and process the data. They’ll also build the skills needed to participate in worldwide hackathons.

Age: 13 and up
Experience: Some experience

Starting Data Science – Python

Students will learn the fundamentals of data science with the help of UC Berkeley’s famous Data 8 course. They’ll learn about what’s causing the buzz in machine learning, and will be able to work on some exciting projects themselves.

Ages: 13 and up
Experience: At least two years of coding experience

Starting USACO Competition Coding – Java, C++, or Python

USACO is a national programming competition for high school students that is a fun and prestigious measuring stick for experienced students. Students will learn the algorithms and data structures necessary to advance up the ranks.

Ages: 13 and up
Experience: At least two years of coding experience
