Hongbin is currently in his senior year at University of California San Diego and is a specialist on our Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning team. Before Breakout Mentors he had a lot of hands-on experience with personal projects. Plus Hongbin leads the computer vision team for the UCSD robotics competition team – think BattleBots if you ever saw that on TV!
Hongbin was the 2023 summer intern for Breakout Mentors, where he worked with an incredible range of students. Everyone from middle schoolers just getting their first taste of AI to a research paper quality medical imaging project with a high school student. Plus Hongbin created a new unit for our curriculum on reinforcement learning, which many of our students enjoy for it’s intersection with video games.
Let’s get to know him:
When did you start to code?
I started to code in my Junior year of High School in my AP Computer Science class.
Why is it important for kids to start coding when young?
Coding is a fun and rewarding process. Besides that, coding motivates kids to think critically about a problem and enables them to examine the world from various perspectives.
What advice do you have for kids learning how to code?
Begin your coding journey toward something that you are passionate about making. Through this journey, you will face many challenges but don’t be discouraged since coding should be rewarding at the end of the day. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions and wisely use your available resources.
