Kids Programming Offerings in the Austin Texas Area
At Breakout Mentors, we focus on providing a personalized Austin Area kids coding journey for students with a wide range of experience levels. Whether they’re taking their first steps into coding during elementary or middle school or are seasoned high school CS students, we ensure that the pace of learning is just right for them. Our curriculum encompasses a variety of kids coding languages such as Scratch, Python, Java, HTML & JavaScript, and more. Our Coding Fundamentals Track is tailored for novices.
Typically, children between the ages of 9 to 11 with little previous experience, will start their journey with Scratch drag-and-drop coding. Yet, a growing number are keen to dive directly into typing the code. For these students and most middle schoolers, this track is completed in Python. However, our emphasis isn’t solely on the language but on grasping the core logic: understanding the rhythm of the code encompassing loops, conditionals, variables, and functions. Our mentors play an instrumental role, guiding learners beyond just concepts, aiding in foresight and problem-solving, all while facilitating the creation of exciting projects.
Once learners cement their foundational programming skills, we transition to the Computer Science Track. Here, they are introduced to complex concepts while continuing game development and making fun projects. The focus of this Austin Area kids coding track shifts to object-oriented programming, foundational data structures, recursion, and more, predominantly using Python or Java, especially if they’re gearing up for AP Computer Science.
The most advanced students are in our USACO Competitive Programming Academy or Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Academy. These pathways are crafted for high school students who are ahead of the curve, having outstripped the courses available in schools and ready to apply their skills in real-world applications. Impressively, we also have a few prodigious middle school students in these tracks.
On the other hand, young girls who resonate with having female mentors, we also proudly offer the Girls Coding Academy.

What Customers Say
Both our sons have mentors and we’re very happy with the personalized approach for each. The younger is learning Scratch and older Java. Both boys were interested in coding for a while and did several summer camps, but we were aimed to continue learning during the school year. We also needed help channeling their interest into a more focused direction with goals and milestones. Breakout Mentors has exceeded our expectations, providing engaging instruction that challenges them. The boys take pride in their projects and continue to have fun!
Father of 3rd & 5th grade boys in Los Altos
We just passed our second anniversary with Breakout Mentors. Our 12-year-old son has had two mentors and they’ve both been terrific: enthusiastic, knowledgeable, professional, and patient. They’ve been great about building a curriculum on the fly around his interests and keeping him engaged and learning. Highly recommended.

My son loves video games and says he wants to create them when he’s older. We’ve sent him to many summer camps to learn beginner coding. Though he enjoyed them, he basically played video games all day. With Breakout Mentors he is finally actually learning, rather than just playing. I know the mentor is channeling my son’s excitement about computer games in a productive way. My son always looks forward to meeting his mentor.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to complete each course?
It varies greatly by student age, experience level, and learning pace. The aim of the tracks is to deeply understand the programming concepts and problem solving skills required in coding. It isn’t a checkbox curriculum: just a shallow introduction to many concepts. We encourage our mentors and students to extend projects by adding new features and creative touches. This give students the experience of brainstorming, formulating a plan, translating it into code, and troubleshooting. They’ll see the patterns in how to organize code to plan ahead and allow future features. And they’ll finish projects they are proud of, which keeps them motivated to continue learning!
The typical student might spend the first year on the Coding Fundamentals Track and the second year on the Computer Science Track. However, it isn’t a goal to finish quickly. For students who still need more practice with the fundamentals, but can handle more abstract concepts, we can bring some of that in earlier. We have a lot of experience from years of working with students how best to challenge them to keep advancing.
What are the credentials of your Austin Texas area coding mentors?
The secret to our success is our team of 50+ talented mentors. We hire Computer Science students at top colleges like Stanford and UC Berkeley. Each mentor goes through a rigorous vetting process to ensure they are the right fun and engaging personality match for working with kids. Our hiring process emphasizes innate tutoring instincts and then new mentors are put through our thorough training to make them even better. We know you’ll be wowed by your mentor, which is why we make the first session risk free!
My child doesn’t have any experience. Are these courses good for beginners?
Yes, absolutely! We work with many complete beginners who may benefit from a one-on-one mentor as their first coding experience. Some kids learn at a different pace, others want the personal connection, and plenty just want to make sure the initial experience is amazing. Our goal is to adjust the curriculum to the student’s age, skill level, and interests, we have perfected our approach and curriculum for the last decade!
What concepts will my child learn in a Breakout Mentors Austin Texas area course?
We caution parents to not think of coding concepts in isolation. Too many courses introduce one concept at a time and demonstrate it with short 5 line programs. Learning to code involves the concepts as building blocks, yet the hard part isn’t grasping how that individual building block is used. It is actually putting it into practice and being able to combine it with other concepts to achieve the desired result.
Our students learn all the important coding concepts as they are ready: loops, conditionals, variables, and functions. Arrays and other basic data structures, object-oriented programming, recursion, and more. However, it isn’t a theoretical understanding of these concepts. From day one our students write code from the ground up and start to work on larger code bases. The mentor assists with the many critical thinking skills necessary beyond the individual concepts, like planning ahead in game design and troubleshooting when things go wrong.
Do you have a free trial?
At Breakout Mentors the first session is risk free with a satisfaction guarantee. If you don’t feel it is a fit, we will issue a 100% refund. We put a lot of effort into determining the mentor who is the right long-term fit, so want families who are committed to continuing if we deliver a great experience. That’s how we differ from some of our competitors — we don’t advertise a free trial, only to have one teacher do the trial class, then switch to someone else.
