Kids Advanced Coding Camps

Kids learning to code need a personalized approach to keep learning year-round and to be challenged at the right level. They don’t need another one week, one-size-fits-all summer camp!

Summer is an excellent opportunity for kids to code – more hours are available to discover new interests and dive deep on their passions. For this reason, kids coding summer camps are extremely popular.

Year-round Breakout Mentors offers one-on-one mentoring. Each child is carefully matched with a Computer Science student at Stanford, UC Berkeley, or Santa Clara University by personality and interests to ensure the right mentor fit. They hold weekly 90 minute sessions where the mentor constantly adjusts the difficulty and introduces new concepts as the student is ready. Students are proud of their personalized games and itching to keep learning.

During the summer we also offer a personalized camp option. Our mentors travel to the student’s home to work with a group of up to four friends, typically three hours a day for one week. We design a custom offering based on the group’s experience and interests. The perfect way to have fun and learn a ton!

Advanced Computer Science For Kids Learning to Code

Many Breakout Mentors students are too advanced for the typical kid coding classes and camps. They find each offering just goes over the same things, never advancing beyond the basics. Or when they introduce a more advanced concept, it is in a very cookie-cutter, plug-and-play manner.

Most kids who start with Breakout Mentors will first solidify their fundamentals through making games in Java or Python. The goal is to effectively use the tools they have before learning new ways of doing things, or moving to a more advanced programming environment.

From there, the sky is the limit. The one-on-one mentoring format is perfect for personalization and challenging advanced kids. Some Breakout Mentors students with the help of their mentor have focused on:

  • iOS, Android, and web apps with complex backend functionality
  • Unity for 3D game programming and Virtual Reality projects
  • Arduino for circuits and Internet of Things projects
  • Competition programming at USACO platinum level
  • Low-level C programming to make own programming language and compiler
  • Self-study for AP Computer Science as a middle schooler
  • Data science projects using NBA and other sports data
