Kids Programming Offerings in the Los Angeles Area
Breakout Mentors offers a tailored experience for every learner, from those dipping their toes into coding in elementary or middle school to seasoned high school coders. While we provide multiple learning paths and coding programs, your child will be engaged at the ideal speed, avoiding a generic approach. Our students use many kids coding languages including Scratch, Python, Java, HTML & JavaScript, and more.
The Coding Fundamentals Track is for beginners who can’t yet code independently. Most youngsters aged 9 to 11 with minimal prior knowledge begin with the intuitive Scratch drag-and-drop interface. However, many kids today may want to jump straight into typing out the code in Python. For these eager learners and the majority of middle schoolers, we complete this track in Python. The language isn’t as important as deeply understanding the logic: mastering the flow of the code with loops, conditionals, variables, and functions. Mentors guide students to acquire the many problem-solving skills necessary beyond mere concepts, including planning ahead and troubleshooting to fix bugs, all while creating cool projects.
After students have a strong foundation in coding ability, we advance to more powerful concepts in our Computer Science Track. They still produce projects and games, this time while learning object-oriented programming, core data structures, recursion, and more. This track is often done in Python as well, although some students do Java if entering AP Computer Science A.
Our highest achieving students are in our USACO Competitive Programming Academy or Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Academy. These are designed for high schoolers who’ve surpassed available school courses and are ready for real-world applications. We also have a handful of exceptionally sharp middle schoolers in these tracks.
For young girls seeking female inspiration, we also offer the Girls Coding Academy.

What Customers Say
My son loves video game dev and says he wants to create them when he’s older. We’ve sent him to many summer camps to learn beginner coding. Though he enjoyed them, he basically played video games all day. With Breakout Mentors he is finally actually learning, rather than just playing. I know the mentor is channeling my son’s excitement about computer games in a productive way. My son always looks forward to meeting his mentor.
Mother of 6th grade boy in Sherman Oaks
Our son who has a strong aptitude for math – we knew that he would love the challenges that coding could provide, but struggled to find a program that engaged and inspired him. 2 years ago when I reached out to Breakout Mentors, I knew that we finally found the right place. They paired our son with an amazing mentor – a student at UCLA – and the two have been working together ever since. His mentor has challenged and inspired our son immensely. They started with text based games in basic Python syntax and logic, then our son developed games from scratch, explored CodingBat and other computer science tutoring websites, worked on object-oriented programming and classes, and is now working on APIs, data visualization and graphing. We cannot rave enough about Breakout Mentors. My only wish is that we found them sooner!
Father of 14 year old boy in Santa Monica
Both our sons have mentors and we’re very happy with the personalized approach for each. The younger is learning Scratch and older Java. Both boys were interested in coding for a while and did several summer camps, but we were aimed to continue learning during the school year. We also needed help channeling their interest into a more focused direction with goals and milestones. Breakout Mentors has exceeded our expectations, providing engaging instruction that challenges them. The boys take pride in their projects and continue to have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions
What concepts will my child learn in a Breakout Mentors Los Angeles area kids coding course?
We caution parents to not think of coding concepts in isolation. Too many courses introduce one concept at a time and demonstrate it with short 5 line programs. Learning to code involves the concepts as building blocks, yet the hard part isn’t grasping how that individual building block is used. It is actually putting it into practice and being able to combine it with other concepts to achieve the desired result.
Our students learn all the important coding concepts as they are ready: loops, conditionals, variables, and functions. Arrays and other basic data structures, object-oriented programming, recursion, and more. However, it isn’t a theoretical understanding of these concepts. From day one our students write code from the ground up and start to work on larger code bases. The mentor assists with the many key skills necessary beyond the individual concepts, like planning ahead in game design and troubleshooting when things go wrong.
How long will it take for my child to become good at coding?
How long does it take to become good at playing the piano? Or doing mathematics? An even tougher question: what is the overall goal of education? In short, everyone learns at different speeds and our goal is to challenge at the perfect pace for each student. That means thinking of it as a long-term goal and understanding the long-term result is worth the effort. We find the more the student achieves in their coding education, the more valuable the sessions become! We are able to move towards intermediate projects with hundreds of lines of code or really dive into a complex CS concept to demonstrate the power and simplicity it provides. So we hope that our students don’t stop learning at an arbitrary point that is “good enough”. However, we also understand the need for external markers and goals. For example, we work with students to be ready for AP CS A or to participate in a coding competition. In these cases, we can drive towards those goals and provide assessments on time estimates.
Which computer programming languages do you teach in the Los Angeles area?
Breakout Mentors can work in almost any programming language and we are always open to special requests. We have had students use Scratch, Python, Java, Code.org drag-and-drop, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, C++, C, Unity, Godot engine, iOS Swift, and probably some more I’m forgetting!
However, the majority of our students want our recommendation for the best programming language for them, which is often Python. It is important we stick with one rather than bounce around, since the language isn’t as important as learning the logic: understanding the flow of the code with loops, conditionals, variables, and functions. The mentor will teach the many skills necessary beyond the individual concepts, how to plan ahead and debug.
Do you have a free trial?
At Breakout Mentors the first session is risk free with a satisfaction guarantee. If you don’t feel it is a fit, we will issue a 100% refund. We put a lot of effort into determining the mentor who is the right long-term fit, so want families who are committed to continuing if we deliver a great experience. That’s how we differ from some of our competitors — we don’t advertise a free trial, only to have one teacher do the trial class, then switch to someone else.
My child doesn’t have any experience. Are these courses good for beginners?
Yes, absolutely! We work with many complete beginners who may benefit from a one-on-one mentor as their first coding experience. Some kids learn at a different pace, others want the personal connection, and plenty just want to make sure the initial experience is amazing. Our goal is to adjust the curriculum to the student’s age, skill level, and interests, we have perfected our approach and curriculum for the last decade!

Our approach isn’t just a brief introduction but rather a sustained, comprehensive learning experience spanning months and even years. Our students cultivate a love of coding and jump ahead of their classmates.
We are eager to help your child too, whether they are experiencing their very first coding lesson in elementary school or are already taking advanced courses in high school.
Imagine a future where:
- You do not need to spend hours researching summer camps or classes, since you have a trusted mentor to guide your child’s coding education.
- Your child comes home from a school CS class confidently stating how easy it is and that their friends look to them for assistance.
- You proudly report to other parents your child’s impressive coding accomplishments beyond the classroom.
- You possess an unwavering conviction that you’ve equipped your child with the critical skills necessary for a future workforce dominated by code and AI.
