Henna is a junior at University of Washington studying Computer Science. She works with a wide range of students, from beginner Python to high school AP CS A level Java, including starting to solve USACO competitive programming problems. Let’s hear more about her background and experience mentoring:
When did you start to code?
I began coding in my freshman year of high school. As I entered my first year, I decided to explore a Computer Science course out of curiosity to delve deeper into the realm of technology. Turns out, my decision to enroll in that Python class was the best decision I made as I quickly fell in love with programming and its boundless possibilities!
Why is it important for kids to start coding when young?
Starting coding at a young age can develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills that are crucial in the evolving world. Having more opportunities for practical applications not only improves technical skills but also branches off to positively change other aspects of life and promote diversity.
What do you find rewarding about teaching kids how to code?
The ambitions, creativity, and curiosity that they possess are something to eagerly anticipate. Witnessing their enthusiasm for tackling new projects/material, debugging tough errors, and exploring their creative limits is truly inspiring. They always persevere and I find it rewarding when they express their joy and interests through coding. I look forward to further enhancing their skills and guiding them on their journey!
