Clara is the perfect role model for Breakout Mentors students. She is on the crew team at Stanford and very active on campus, while also extremely driven in her Computer Science coursework. Let’s get to know her a bit better!
When did you start to code?
My first experience with programming was in my sophomore year of high school when I created my first website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I learned how to code more formally in my senior year of high school in an AP Computer Science class.
Why is it important for kids to start coding when young?
I wish I began coding when I was much younger! Learning to code is like learning a new and unfamiliar language. It’s never too late to start learning, but the earlier you start learning to code, the easier it will be for your brain to pick up the skill.
What do you find rewarding about teaching kids how to code?
I love seeing my students get excited about a project and create fun add-ons to enhance their project. I love witnessing their incredible creativity and enthusiasm. Being able to witness this and contribute to their learning is incredibly rewarding.
