Nandika is a senior at UC Berkeley studying Computer Science and Economics. She grew up in Cupertino and started coding in middle school, just like many Breakout Mentors students! Nandika works one-on-one with 8th and 10th grade girls learning Java, including one enrolled in AP CS.
When did you start to code?
I started to code in 8th grade, after I took a summer camp about web design and development. Though I initially joined the camp to learn more about design, I became more interested in coding after adding cool effects to the website I was working on using JavaScript. After that summer, I continued to learn more about computer science by taking classes at my local community college and eventually decided to major in it when I came to Cal.
Why is it important for kids to start coding when young?
Just like any other subject or skill, starting early helps you gain more practice and experience. Coding can also help you build other important skills like organization, communication, and creativity.
What advice do you have for kids learning how to code?
Work on projects that interest you and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! There are so many cool things out there that you can do so don’t be afraid to try and ask for help when you need it.
